While your primary goal may be to provide exceptional dental
care, it’s also important to remember that you are also the leader of a small
business. And, as the leader, it’s important to keep your employees happy and
satisfied with their work. The saying “A happy wife is a happy life” also
applies to your office staff, hygienists, and assistants who are the face and
life of your practice.
All too often
employees only hear from the boss when they mess something up or do something
wrong. But your employees, like all people, needing to receive feedback on
their daily performance. And, more often than not, they need to hear more about
what they’re doing right as opposed to what they’re doing wrong. Emphasis on
positive behaviors will ensure that they continue to do them and will reinforce
the good over the bad.
But we know that it can be hard to make time to praise each
individual when you’re in the trenches and focused on your own work. That’s why
we’ve got some free (well mostly free) ways to show appreciation for a job well
done.
Tip #2: Acknowledge personal events in an employee’s life.
Wouldn’t it be weird if your boss never wished you a happy
birthday? Or congratulated you on the birth of your first grandchild? Or
offered condolences when your grandmother passed away?
Yeah, that would be really weird. Don’t be that boss!
For many employers, walking the fine line between being “the
boss” and being “the buddy” is really hard. But it doesn’t have to be.
Employees want to feel like their boss cares about their lives and what is
happening in them. But most employees don’t expect you to attend the funeral of
their parakeet or come to their son’s 3rd birthday party. They just
want to know that you care about who they are and what’s important to them
outside of dentistry.
Cards are a really great way of handling these more personal
situations if you’re not comfortable discussing them face to face. Keep a stack
in your desk for situations that might pop up during the week. That way you’re
always prepared and your employees will be impressed by your prompt response to
events in their lives.
