Monday Morning Meeting: Show Employees How Much You Love Them, Tip #5

While your primary goal may be to provide exceptional dental care, it’s also important to remember that you are also the leader of a small business. And, as the leader, it’s important to keep your employees happy and satisfied with their work. The saying “A happy wife is a happy life” also applies to your office staff, hygienists, and assistants who are the face and life of your practice.

All too often employees only hear from the boss when they mess something up or do something wrong. But your employees, like all people, needing to receive feedback on their daily performance. And, more often than not, they need to hear more about what they’re doing right as opposed to what they’re doing wrong. Emphasis on positive behaviors will ensure that they continue to do them and will reinforce the good over the bad.

But we know that it can be hard to make time to praise each individual when you’re in the trenches and focused on your own work. That’s why we’ve got some free (well mostly free) ways to show appreciation for a job well done.

Tip #5: Acknowledge an employee’s ideas or comments at staff meetings.

Everyone hates the boss who takes credit for their ideas. Don’t be that boss!

Instead, work hard to acknowledge each employee’s contribution to the workplace that has bettered the lives of each person working there. For example, if Vicki recognizes that hands-free phones would be easier for the front desk staff to use in the office, researches the prices of the phones and which has the best ratings, and presents her idea to the office manager, then she deserves to be singled out for recognizing a problem and solving it.

That recognition will make her feel that her contributions to the workplace are valued and important, she’ll be more likely to identify problems and present solutions in the future, and she’ll feel happy that you recognized her in front of her peers.

Monday Morning Meeting: Show Employees How Much You Love Them, Tip #4

While your primary goal may be to provide exceptional dental care, it’s also important to remember that you are also the leader of a small business. Tip #4: Offer a day or half day off with pay for a job well done.

So this is where the “mostly free” tips come in, as this one is not free and might be a little expensive. However, this reward should be reserved for when an employee truly goes above and beyond their job description in the name of your practice.

Keep in mind that your employees are a large part of the reason why your patients keep coming back. If they are blowing people’s minds with their courtesy, respect, generosity, and fairness then chances are they’re inadvertently making you a lot of money! Rewarding someone for doing something truly spectacular with a paid half day will not only make them feel awesome but will also show them that you truly appreciate how hard they are working to make your office a success.

This isn’t something we recommend doing all the time. But just knowing that it’s possible is sure to make your employees work hard, long, and tirelessly to make sure your patients are satisfied with their dental care and personal care in your office.

Monday Morning Meeting: Show Employees How Much You Love Them, Tip #3

While your primary goal may be to provide exceptional dental care, it’s also important to remember that you are also the leader of a small business. The saying “A happy wife is a happy life” also applies to your office staff, hygienists, and assistants who are the face and life of your practice.

Tip #3: Have a designated parking spot for highflying employees.

Okay, okay! We know that “employee of the month” prizes are usually just for show and that most employees find little value in the “award”. But this is a convenience prize that’s offered whenever you find merit and can last for as long as you want.

The goal is to reward an employee with a designated parking space that is convenient or close to the door. When you hear or see an employee going above and beyond, you “reward” them with the designated parking space.

This kind of small prize costs nothing and allows the employee to a reward that is not only convenient for them but also shows other employees their hard work. People love to be praised in front of their peers! Let the employee keep the parking spot until the next employee does something awesome. Whether that’s a day or two months is up to you!

Monday Morning Meeting: Show Employee's How Much You Love Them, Tip #2

While your primary goal may be to provide exceptional dental care, it’s also important to remember that you are also the leader of a small business. And, as the leader, it’s important to keep your employees happy and satisfied with their work. The saying “A happy wife is a happy life” also applies to your office staff, hygienists, and assistants who are the face and life of your practice.

Tip #2: Acknowledge personal events in an employee’s life.

Wouldn’t it be weird if your boss never wished you a happy birthday? Or congratulated you on the birth of your first grandchild? Or offered condolences when your grandmother passed away?

Yeah, that would be really weird. Don’t be that boss!

For many employers, walking the fine line between being “the boss” and being “the buddy” is really hard. But it doesn’t have to be. Employees want to feel like their boss cares about their lives and what is happening in them. But most employees don’t expect you to attend the funeral of their parakeet or come to their son’s 3rd birthday party. They just want to know that you care about who they are and what’s important to them outside of dentistry.

Cards are a really great way of handling these more personal situations if you’re not comfortable discussing them face to face. Keep a stack in your desk for situations that might pop up during the week. That way you’re always prepared and your employees will be impressed by your prompt response to events in their lives.
